I've recently fallen in love with Asian cinema. After I recently saw the History Channel documentary "How Bruce Lee Changed the World" for the second time (became an instant fan the first time) I went out and bought the 20th Century Fox's Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection DVD set and really fell in love with the movies the second time around, especially "Fist of Fury" (with "Way of the Dragon" running a close second).
Although I'd known about YesAsia.com for some years I never ordered anything from there until I looked for Bruce's movies on blu-ray (BD), which they have (though I did buy the DVD "My son A-chang" with a precocious pre-teen Bruce Lee). This happened to coincide with the release of Donnie Yen's "The Iron Monkey" on BD here in the U.S. I loved the movie when I saw it many years before on DVD.
While cruising YesAsia I also discovered other movies I already knew (the "Once Upon a Time in China" series) now on BD in HK but not here in the states. After doing some research I bought the "Confucius" BD from the Amazon UK site and was delighted by Bey Logan's commentary, and I didn't even know he existed before then! Not only is he a delight to listen to, but he's a great resource for other Asian movies worthy of checking out.
I just finished listening to Bey's commentary on the UK release of the "Young Bruce Lee" BD ("Bruce Lee My Brother" in HK) and because he repeatedly forlorned the Western actors' bad acting, my goal now is to become the first GOOD Western actor in a Chinese movie! (Though I'm sure others have preceded me despite Mr. Logan's laments.)
Hey, I even started studying written Chinese, which I've always found fascinating, though I'm torn weather to learn how to speak Mandarin or Cantonese - I would love to learn at least a little of Bruce's mother tongue but to be practical there seem to be many more opportunities for Mandarin speakers.
Anyway, if you're reading this, Bey Logan, give me a shout and I'll come to HK to meet with you as soon as I get my new passport. (Or any other Asian movie producer/director/casting agent or established movie star - you hear that, Jet Li? Jackie Chan? Donnie Yen? Chow Yun Fat? Jay Chou? Michelle YO!? Anybody?) In the meantime, I'll keep plugging away.
Cheers!
