  • TimeOut magazine reviews our EP with mixed emotions

    Thursday, Dec 4, 2008 2:49PM / Standard Entry

Just remember each reviewer has different tastes. This time we got 3 stars.... but out of 6? Don't know how that works out

Here is yet another review of the EP that has come out today. The review has lots of good things to say about us, but also thinks we sound too much like other bands? Blink 182? Haha. Not that its a bad thing. We don't do it intentionally. As you can tell for yourself, we are not copying anybody's style, we are out there to find our own style. And we haven't found something that people can point out to say that is so FBI in likeness.... the story is online here:

    Or just read it here:

    Fire Bird International

Since their formation just over a year ago, the stock of local band Fire Bird International (commonly known as FBI) has continued to rise, with a recent appearance on The Underground compilation backing up their regular performances at the indie showcase. FBI's debut EP shows precisely why the band has progressed in leaps and bounds in the short time since their creation.

The eight-track EP makes a solid impression from the outset, with the band's best-known songs Man Love, Masquerade and Loneliness upfront, before the orgasmic conclusion of Gonna Make Love. Throughout, FBI exhibit an admirably tight sound, decent energy, cheeky humour (Man Love!, for instance, concludes with the line “but not in a gay way, man”) and a melodic catchiness – demonstrated by singer Cain McInerney's impressive vocal versatility – which makes this EP extremely listenable.

The major setback is the constant distraction of vocal and stylistic similarities to better-known acts. But if FBI can emerge from behind its Blink 182-type veil and cultivate a more individual style, this bird might just take flight.

  • HK Magazine goes gay over our EP...

HK Magazine goes gay over our EP...

    Issue #759: Creative Matter

It's really interesting to see the reviews from the different magazines and their different takes on it. It is really evident from some of the writer's comments that he/she (whatever gender Justice may be) came to our first ever bar show or at least read the review from the Underground website. Trying to get the crowd amped, during the FBI Theme song, I screamed "jump, jump, everybody", so of course people think that's the name of the song. Haha.

It really doesn't bother me that some of the details may be abit obscured, but I appreciate their kind words and their attempt to not label us into any category. (That's what the song: 'Death to Emo' is all about). We don't want to be labelled. We just want to be great musicians and try a little bit of everything. We want our listeners to enjoy and we want to appeal to a wider spectrum of audience. I really love the last line. I really go gay over it. haha! Thanks Justice for the great review. 4 stars again.... amazing! We can't expect much more as we still have much room for improvement. Anyway here it is:

  • We showed you what we've got

    Saturday, Nov 29, 2008 11:29PM / Standard Entry

"Let me show you what we've got"

Last night we showed you what we have got at the show presented by Archmusic, with bands Karat and The Lovesong. The Fringe was packed with a great audience that bopped around until the early hours of the morning. By the time we came on it was after 12 and the two previous bands tired out the audience, but luckily the crowd still had some left in the tank for us. We really rocked this night. We have been practicing in the studio so that we can sound more like the album and I am sure the audience really appreciated the subtle differences that made the songs even better.

"What the hell do you want from me?"

My voice was the best it has been in 6 months and I wasn't suffering from any limpness at all. I really felt that our live performance has improved, especially my singing. I have been tackling my Asthma the best way possible, with a good diet and proper exercise. Keeping a healthy mind and body really helps.

    "ROAR!!!"

The stresses from the EP have gone down considerably since we have already sold half the stock in less than a month. It is selling well at the CD stores and we keep selling more and more to new fans at our shows.

You might be feeling like this while you listen to the CD

You will definately be feeling the beat! Thanks Nice!

Archvictor sings Loneliness... another song off the EP

And the great reviews keep on coming. I picked up a HK magazine at The Fringe to find yet another review of the EP, giving us 4 out of 5 stars. I wouldn't expect any more than that. Then there would be no room for improvement. I will scan it later and attach it for all to see if you haven't seen it already.

    Issue #759: Creative Matter

Plus, there has been another review of the Underground Compilation CD that is a must read. It gives us a song-by-song review of the CD and rates FBI highly, suggesting that you should hire us for 'bong parties' etc. Why not? I like that idea. Here is the review:

     http://konghongrock.blogspot.com/2008/11/underground-something-alternative-album.html

We played all of the songs off the EP, plus the recently popular song, ‘Lan Kwai Fong’. And it wouldn’t be FBI without our theme song at the end of the show to get everybody moving once again. I really think that we gained some more fans from this night and hope that they return to see what else we have got.

    We're going to PARTY!!!

Unfortunately for some, at this stage, we have been playing the same songs for some time. But, we plan to have a break in January so that we can come back and give you some new tunes to rock out to. We have two songs in the pipeline, one song is another pop punk song and the other song is another Heavy song that has the potential to rival the intensity of ‘The Masquerade’. I am really looking forward to developing these songs further. I want to have a few more songs that will really make the crowd amped and ready to rock....

Get ready for some new songs early next year that will boil your blood!

    I

Not so many pictures of Nice! Poor guy! But, awesome drummer!!!!

Our assault on Asia continues.. we have been lucky enough to be mentioned on Malaysia's online magazine, Voize, which has been so nice to feature us in their favourite picks and ‘we love’ section. Hopefully the publicity will help to promote our EP in Malaysia and throughout Asia. Here is the link to the page....

And if you haven't heard our cover of Chai Gai, I advise you to read our other blogs and download the song from mp3.com.hk Just a reminder that this was just a practice. We want you to hear it live for yourself, live. Though, I am going to need the assistance of some pingyin to assist me at the show at Backstage on the 13th of Dec, which is going to be so cool. I can't wait to sing to you guys in Cantonese and impress you with our ever improving live set.

     mp3.com.hk

We are also going to have another underage show on the 21st of Dec for Shout Out organised by Sabrina. So, we really hope all of our younger fans can get along to it to so they can mosh out to songs like ‘The Masquerade’. This is going to be a marathon event of great HK bands. Hope to see you there. Sometimes I just go on and on… can’t help it… Just too much going on!!!

    Man Love!!!
