DRUM magazine from PERTH reviews our EP
Monday, Mar 30, 2009 4:11PM / Standard Entry
Hi,
Just to let you know that there is a review of our EP in an Australian Magazine called DRUM from my hometown city of Perth. It was written by Patrick Cavalli. I haven't got a good enough scan for you to read what it is about, so I will type it down the bottom for you.
Drum article reads:
There's a comical tongue in cheek feeling to this debut from Fire Bird International (FBI) that leaves a smile. Whether it's the juxtaposing of ironic themes and musical styles, the succint yet obvious lyrical approach or something else entirely, it is hard to say. Accidental or deliberate: probably irrelevant.
This four-piece from Hong Kong leave little to the imagination with song titles like Man Love!, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Gonna Make Love and Loneliness, as lyrically their West Aussie singer Cain McInerney, plays such a straight bat it's deadpan. Take autobiographical closer Don't Quit Your Day Job: where he quotes his doubters "You're very average, leave it to the pros... no matter your hopes you'll never get any hoes." Maybe it's the freedom of writing songs in a country where English isn't the first language, it's as though he's having a laugh but at the same time bearing his chip for all to see. Musically, the band also does a great job of stating the obvious. They cover a fair amount of territory and hit their mark when resembling All American Rejects and Blink 182 with tracks more likely to be favoured on home town radio stations. However, FBI are far more interesting when dark and evil in tracks Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and The Masquerade, where the band create a bit of distorted theatre to go with all the light entertainment and appear most comfortable when free to shred.
Enjoying themselves the whole time, FBI could stand out from the crowd, not so much from a credible display of musical virtuosity but more so for their ability to shrug labels whilst maintaining an entertainment value immune from the pretentious.

Listen Up! + T-shirt Samples
Friday, Mar 20, 2009 1:47PM / Standard Entry
LISTEN UP!
Just a reminder that Listen Up will be on tonight. We will be the last band performing at 11:50pm. I know... soooo late. I think by the time we get on stage I am going to be drunk already. How else am I going to pass the time. lol.
We are going to debut a new song called 'The Way of the Fist'. It is another heavy number to add to our repertoire. We are going to play a cover of one of Soler's songs and I will sing in Cantonese. Little bit nervous about that. And we will play all of our classic FBI songs.
T-SHIRTS
Also, in the pipeline could be some FBI t-shirts but I am still debating whether or not to make a copy of the ones we have already (plus the alivenotdead website) or to put a different design on the front. Well, we have worn the same shirts for almost two years now and I think it is time we had a change of suit. But, we have got 2 years of product advertising so I am not sure.
The new design is based on a design that I had come up with, but has been put together by my girlfriend. It is a FBI badge surrounded by skulls and arrows. I really like it, but maybe girls would not want to wear skulls on their chest. Or maybe they do? Have a look at the t-shirt samples and please give me your opinion.
T-shirt Samples
Here is a closer look at the design
It would be cool if we could do both, but unfortunately, I can't afford it. Another idea is to have the new design as a badge on one of the sleaves. Please leave your comments and let me know which one you are most likely to wear.
Most appreciated
Cain

Our next review is the release titled Fire Bird International from feel good rockers FBI. I first heard of FBI when I had the opportunity to review the Underground Something Alternative album. Their track Man Love! which they contributed to the compilation was a highlight for me, so therefore I was naturally excited when Cain (lead singer) approached me and asked whether I would be interested in reviewing their own release.
Track list
1. Man Love!
2. The Masquerade
3. Loneliness
4. Gonna Make Love
5. Haunted
6. Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
7. Man Love! (Underground Version)
8. Don't Quit Your Day Job
Fire Bird International is an album of eight fairly different tracks. It's safe to say that FBI have shown their versatility when it comes to making music. What seems to unite the tracks together are the quirky fun lyrics and song topics. Save for perhaps Loneliness which is a down tempo ballad about what some would call love.
I usually like to list some reference bands when trying to discuss what a band sounds like, but it is surprisingly different when it comes to FBI. Some songs have a hint of the Red Hot Chili Peppers while others have a dash of Blink 182.
The album opens with what for me, is their strongest track in “Man Love!” It's basically about showing your bros some good old fashioned heterosexual loving. It's infectiously catchy and gets you bouncing the way a good pop punk track should.
Since being treated to Guitar Hero World Tour for Christmas, and playing through career mode as a bassist, my ears seem to detect good bass lines in songs these days. While listening through this album, my bass line radar was going off. Case in point : 0.57 into “Gonna Make Love” The bass lines on the whole are pretty funky and remind me of some No Doubt songs. I'm talking about the days when Gwen Stefani was making good music.
While reading the album sleeve I noticed a shout out to Underground Chris B's “sexy vocals” on the track Gonna Make Love. Being hopelessly male I naturally had to investigate the so called sexy vocals. Boys, sexy they were! In fact as the song was coming to its end and the vocals becoming more provocative. My trusty laptop couldn't handle the heat and crashed. True story.
Trying to pull some sense of professionalism together after that was going to be difficult, but I managed to find myself enjoying the guitar work. Some of the distorted tones weren't doing it for me, but I was impressed greatly at the clean tones. What does that mean to none musicians? Probably sweet F all, but basically it means that the guitars generally sound pleasant. There's a usual bias that tracks recorded by independent bands sound shite, which is why I'm bringing up the subject of the guitar tones. On that note, the rest of the album is recorded pretty solidly as well.
So, why pick up Fire Bird International? If you like a CD where every song doesn't sound the same, is fun to listen to, and has great vocal melodies then its money worth spending. Best tracks for me are Man Love, Loneliness and Haunted.
Fire Bird International is available in Hong Kong from:
CD Warehouse, HK Records and White Noise Records
It is also available on line via the alivenotdead website and it will soon be available through iTunes

FBI releases their debut EP
It's after midnight and it is habitual these past few weeks, having trouble sleeping --so I just get on my laptop whoring the web with hopes I could generate ideas for work. A few minutes in, it occurred to me that I had a CD to review –so I popped in FBI's debut EP and honest-to-goodness, my partially lethargic state of mind jolted awake with their catchy rock tunes. Their style includes melodious riffs and vocals that cross from Linkin Park, Weezer, Incubus, Flaw and many others I cannot think off the top of my head at this ungodly hour. Those who are more familiar with this band might disagree with the choice of bands I am trying to link examples to F.B.I.'s music style but what the hey, I stand corrected. Like I said, it was from the top of my head at an ungodly hour. Their slower tunes on the other hand, are rather funky-and-blues like. Definitely car-ride worthy and two enthusiastic thumbs up. Hong Kong indie music at its finest –so keep up the good work!

One Gwailo and three Hong Kong guys come together to form F.B.I., a band which takes its audience on a musical journey of diverse sounds and on-stage intensity. With Australian vocalist-Cain, lead guitarist- Archvictor, bass guitarist- Jerald and on the drums- Nice.
Firebirds was a band built through a high school friendship of three Hong Kong guys. After participating in a school band project these three were inspired to just play music and have fun together. A chance meeting between Jerald and Cain gave the band an international feel, thus they became Fire Bird International.
F.B.I. emerged six months ago out of the New Territories and are still just new comers to the Hong Kong Rock scene. They have come along way since their first show in a community centre, which was the same day that Cain met the other members of the band. There was an instant connection that proves that music really is the universal language.
Although dedicated to cover songs for the first two months they have now began writing, performing and recording their own songs. In their short time together they have participated in band competitions and have appeared on Icable tv. It’s hard to describe F.B.I.’s style of music because they don’t conform to just one style. I guess you will just have to find out for yourself.
