Love for Life (最愛)

Yesterday, I watched the latest Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) movie, Love for Life (最愛).  It's about a small village in China where many people have been stricken with HIV/ AIDS contracted through selling their blood for money (obviously a black market, unsterile blood bank). The two main characters (both of whom have HIV), become estranged from their spouses and fall in love with each other.

Yes, it's another sad movie, but I was glad in a way to see that someone...Read more

Japan's newest pop singer is actually a CGI creation

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piZ2TkdK4Dw

Incredibly, Aimi Eguchi, the newest member of Japan's pop group AKB 48, is computer generated (composed of parts of the other members).

Here's an article:

Backyard

Last weekend, I stayed up after midnight and noticed a small young deer in the empty lot behind my backyard.  There is a street lamp on the empty lot, but it was very dark.  I was able to take this photo by propping the lens up on the frame of the window.  I've been close to a deer before (at the parks in Toronto and China).  There are many deer in this area and when I was moving into my house (in the autumn of 2009), I saw deer near the roads almost every night.

China and Taiwan 'first joint dictionary'

China and Taiwan 'first joint dictionary'

I thought this was interesting.  Having traveled to both China and Taiwan, I can see how there is some confusion.  For instance, to say Jasmine (as in tea) in Taiwan, you say 茉莉花茶 mòlì huāchá, but in Mainland China, you say 香片茶 Xiāngpiànchá.  Also many Chinese characters are now simplified in Mainland China, but are still in the traditional characters in Taiwan (and Ho...Read more

Mountain woman, Wall woman (山おんあ, 壁おんあ)

My Japanese friends always think its cute that I am a fan of Misaki Ito (伊東美咲) - I think she's the prettiest Japanese woman.  Period.

Anyway, most people know her from "Train Man" (電車男  Densha Otoko), but I like her in Read more

More Japanese maples (紅葉 or イロハモミジ)... but

Yesterday, I went to the same garden center where I had purchased my Acer palmatum 'Sango kaku' Japanese maple tree to look for the elusive (at least it has been for me) Acer palmatum 'Kamagata' Japanese maple tree.  They did receive some new trees in, however still no Kamagata.  I'm always frustrated when I know what I want, have the money to spend, but can't find the product!!!

Anyway, here are some photos of the other Japanese maple trees which they had:

(螳螂 or カマキリor 사마귀)

Today, when I was cleaning up two of my aquariums, I stepped outside (to use the waste water on my lawn), I noticed several baby praying mantis (螳螂 or カマキリor 사마귀) on my bushes - that means one of the egg cases had opened up!  Unfortunately, many were getting knocked down onto the mulch because the wind was very strong today.  I had noticed the egg case last autumn and wondered when it was going to open.  They were really small - only about .75 inch (about 1.9cm).  I hope they make it - if they reach the roses, they can feast...Read more

Japanese maple trees

Today, I was able to get out of work early for the Easter weekend.  Yay!

I ate lunch, then drove around to look for some more Japanese maple trees.

First stop was Atlantic Avenue Orchid & Garden Home .  That's where I sat in on the presentation last weekend and where I bought my Tamukeyama dissectum.  I was looking for a.) Kamagata or b.) o...Read more
