  • Getting married in South Korea? Bring a lot of cash!

    Monday, Apr 30, 2012 6:25AM / Standard Entry

This was a recent article in Reuters.  You can find it here:
    http://news.yahoo.com/getting-married-south-korea-bring-lot-cash-052542023.html

"...in South Korea a couple wanting to get married also needs cash, a lot of it - nearly $200,000, or more than four times the average annual income.

The sky-high costs stem from a combination of cultural traditions that mandate expensive pre-wedding gifts between families, such as mink coats and diamond rings, along with a decades-old custom that the groom must fork over money to provide a home.

The average cost for a wedding in 2011 rose about 270 percent from 1999, while the inflation during the same period rose 45.5 percent. Total costs far outstripped the average annual household income at around 48.3 million Korean won ($42,400), according to government data."

I know a few Koreans and not all of them put their image on as priority #1 (a lot of them do, but so do lots of people in the Los Angeles area).  One the other hand, even my closest Korean friends agreed that I "cannot afford a Korean girlfriend".

  • Actress Jun Ji-hyun (전지현 or 全智賢) ties the knot

    Monday, Apr 30, 2012 6:10AM / Standard Entry

The "Sassy Girl" is off the market!  (Lucky guy!)

"Top actress Jun Ji-hyun, a.k.a. Gianna Jun, married a Korean businessman at Hotel Shilla in central Seoul on Friday, waving goodbye to single life.

She tied the knot with Choi Jun-hyeok, the grandson of acclaimed hanbok designer Lee Young-hee and the son of also famous fashion designer Lee Jeong-woo."

    Here's the article (on http://news.asiaone.com)

I hope she makes another comedy - her recent movies (like Blood: The Last Vampire and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) were okay, but I still like her in My Sassy Girl and Windstruck the best.

  • Chi-ling: No guy asks me out

    Sunday, Apr 29, 2012 12:57AM / Standard Entry

This really surprises me!  If I knew how to contact Lin Chi-Ling, I would definitely ask her out!  One of my friends recently asked me who I thought was the prettiest woman there is, and I quickly said, "Lin Chi-Ling" 林志玲. :)

  • Japanese maple trees in my yard

    Saturday, Apr 7, 2012 6:44AM / Standard Entry

Here are four of the five Japanese maple trees that I have in my yard (they are very small right now, but hopefully in a few years, they will fill out).  The fifth one is a red dissectum (Tamukeyama) and hasn't opened up it's leaves fully yet.  I'm still trying to decide if I should buy a linearilobum Japanese maple (that is one with very fine leaves).

Acer palmatum "Atropurpureum" has deep and dark red leaves.

Acer palmatum "Bloodgood". The classic red leafed Japanese maple tree.

Acer palmatum "Sango Kaku". The coral bark Japanese maple tree.

Acer palmatum "Kamagata". A dwarf Japanese maple tree with red margins along the edge of it's green leaves.
