  • Disappearing HK

I was walking the dog up the mountain this morning, as I do every morning, and stopped to look out at the Soko Islands (as I do every morning). Though I could hardly see them because of the pollution, it made me think that I still prefer them as they are now - i.e. without several huge Gasometers sticking up. If you don't know what a Gasometer is, it is one of the huge metal containers for storing gas, as seen behind King's Cross in London for example. Very industrial and completely out of place on a sub-tropical island in the South China Sea, in the middle of a marine preserve. But if the HK Government and CLP (and behind them of course ExxonMobil) get their way, then that's what's going to happen very soon.

And the Sokos will go the way of the old Star Ferry Pier, Queen's Pier, King Ying Lei Mansion, soon to be followed by the Bauhaus style Wanchai Market building, and the whole street market in Gage Street, Central, and many other things we've come to love in Hong Kong. See my photo album “Disappearing Hong Kong“  for more of the same.

So get out there and do something, before everything slightly old and with personality disappears, even if it is only taking photographs...

  • Do Robots listen to electronica?

A few people have asked me whether or not I ripped off the music in the following TV Ad for the track Electric Road on Celestial's new album of the same name:

Well the answer is no. Because I wrote the music for the commercial. And whilst producing the music I had quite a few bits left over, and so I put them altogether and ended up with the track which became “Electric Road”. If you listen to the album full album track here, you can hear the 45 seconds that make up the commercial right in the middle, almost exactly the same.

A couple of the other tracks started life as instrumentals as performed by The Bass Cadets, our live Dub band that performed at Rockit a couple of years ago (also featuring Dor Yuk of 24 Herberts on Bass and Dan F on laptop). Another track started life as the soundtrack for a soft porn DVD, but probably better not to mention that...
