Lee Seung Gi
Friday, Nov 13, 2009 12:08AM / Members only
So this past year alot of KPOP and KEntertainers have gotten H1N1 and only one major casualty (RIP). The latest victim spanning from SS501 Leader, members of 2AM-Jinwoon and Jo Kwon, SHINee-JongHyun and Onew, Lee Wan etc is entertainer/actor/model/singer/mc Lee Seung Gi 이승기/李昇基. He was slated to perform on this week in LA with Son Dam Bi. But due to his health, he has to curtail all activities as he recovers.
Seems Korean Entertainers have crazy schedules causing them to have not good chance to take care of their health. With their weakened immune systems with tight schedules, no wonder there are alot of stuff happening.
Hope he recovers quickly. I have become a fan thanks to old Xmen, Love Letter, hit song 내 여자라니까 /결혼해 줄래 and the recent drama I caught (one of the drama hits this year so far) 찬란한 유산.

Wheesung "Trickling" (KR2009)

Wheesung 휘성 has a song titled "Trickling" 주르륵. I really don't know him very much. But apparently he is good. He got his friend actor Ji Sun 지성/池城 (New Heart/Save the Last Dance/All In) to be in his MV as well.

Bye Bye Bye Baby

Was too happy. Always felt insecure.
Someday break-up will come as if waking up from a dream
Even without you “I will just get by”
That’s what I had in my mind as I prepared today
You leaving me, and me pretending to understand…
Pretending not to be sad. Pretending to be a decent man.
Stretching out my shoulders. Stretching out my hands
And tried to look good.
The silent sky as if it’s not on my side
It came with dark clouds on a clear sky.
I am holding back my tears but all of the sudden it’s rippling-rippling
Thick raindrops dropping and now it gives misconception that I am trying
"Why did you begin to dislike me, which part has gotten boring"
That’s what I want to ask, but
I will say “It was good relationship” with a brighter smile.
Bye Bye Bye baby, my, my, my love which will be treasured forever (forever) and preciously (preciously).
Good bye you grateful love.
If you have no where to go, I will move away
I’ll secretly hear new-info about you
Give me permission, I will hide alone so I can remember those memories
I’ve learned a lot about love after meeting you
That precious feeling, forget me and I will pray that I will meet you again next life.
I am holding back my tears but all of the sudden it’s rippling-rippling
Thick raindrops dropping and now it gives misconception that I am trying
Why did you begin to dislike me, which part has gotten boring"
That’s what I want to ask, but
I will say “It was a good relationship” with a brighter smile.
I had nothing, so when sending me away, I needed a memory to grab on to
Clean air and calm wind. I wanted to have a “cool” farewell but...
Good bye you grateful love.OTHER

Furniture
Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 11:34PM / Members only
So those who know me, I have lived in my place for over a year. But have not really unpacked. Ok you can blame it on laziness (I confess that is true) but more purely for procrastination purposes. I am always away and out and about. The last thing I need is to unpack stuff that has no "home" or place to go. A big problem when you don't have alot of space and storage options (got to buy them). But if I get a sofa then I really have to get my butt in gear to unpack or move around the stuff in the living room.
Before moving to our current place, we had not really much furniture. Just a small coffee table and picnic table. The rest was in boxes. We opted not to bring beds/bureaus and other stuff. So moving took still 3 hours with three guys but it was efficient from a 3rd floor apartment (no elevator) to second floor condo with an elevator (but on the other side of the building). Due to all the stuff it took time. I cannot imagine moving with furniture as well!!!
So I did try to look for sofas and have not encountered one we liked. My parents are old school and thought black leather sectional (ie like theirs at home). BLECH! We argued wanting a fabric sofa and one that we can have guests sleep on. We wanted it to be comfortable but not wanted to worry about the any springs and what not. We looked at all types even at IKEA. But thought the quality was not good. If we are going to buy, we should INVEST and get a good quality piece. We are in no rush to host any parties or have people over.
Last night finally my mom likes a sofa we like as well from Crate and Barrel. It is called the "sidecare sectional" and we love it. We are worried about getting it into our place. So got to measure it. My folks like it that you can lay on it comfortably. Plus we both love the Jack fabric in charcoal. My sis is going to measure and check it out. Otherwise it is on our wish list. If that is true, then I better get cracking moving and unpacking and figuring out what to do with my stuff. (Oh the horror, but I guess I cannot procrastinate any longer. Maybe during the holidays?)
Yeah once it is settled then we can finally put out our 42 inch flatscreen that has been hibernating. Hmm should unearth the 16G iPod Touch too. (Yeah not always on the edge of technology but then again those who know me that is not my thing.)

Condo association meeting
Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 11:23PM / Members only
After living at our place over a year and two months, we had our first ever meeting last night and I did not attend. At least my sis did as I had class and later met up with parents to celebrate my mom's upcoming bday.
According to my sis, many issues were brought up and the talk about raising the condo fees by $22. Also she heard many complaints from the other tenants especially from the "penthouse" owners. Turns out a few had single person living alone. So many things were brought up.
1) Concierge---complaints about the service 2) humidity in the storage area-thanks to my sis I STORE nothing there save empty boxes and plastic boxes (other tenants had mold on their stuff) 3) more energy efficient light bulbs in parking garage 4) complaints about the landscaping/bricks changing color 5)Directory of all the residences
Though we have lived there over a year, we don't know our neighbors at all!
There were more but I was not there and my sis did not decide to enumerate them back to me. PHEW!
This morning someone decided to startup their leaf blower at 7:30AM! I felt bad for my sis as she has later hours than I do. My parents were not even up then! (I was shocked as my dad has to head south back home for work! Plus to navigate traffic is not fun!)

Korean Class
Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 10:54PM / Members only
So had Korean Class #7 and I missed last week's due to a bday party for JKL. I am glad I did as I met a cool person at the party---a gal raised in KL, of Indian descent, went to University in VA and now lives in Symphony in Boston.
Today's class was small just me, 재범 and Shirley.
So only a few more classes left. Though it was Veteran's Day (a Federal Holiday) we had class and I did have work too.
Today we talked about using "Is it possible" and "Can I ...." to using comparisons etc. One thing I love is the side notes when the students ask stuff that is not necessarily in the handouts etc. This is when I learn alot.
========================================================
FULL CREDIT for Korean class notes/exercises to MIT Korean Class (Intermediate)1. -ㄹ/을 수 있다 vs. –ㄹ/을 수 없다
<Verb-ㄹ/을 수 있다> is translated as <can V> or <it is possible that … V> in English.
–ㄹ and –을 is chosen by looking at the ending consonant (=받침):
With ending consonant 먹(다) + 을 수 있다
먹을 수 있어요 I can eat.Without ending consonant 마시(다) + ㄹ 수 있다
마실 수 있어요 I can drink.<Verb-ㄹ/을 수 없다> is translated as <cannot V> or <it is not possible that … V> in English.
With ending consonant 참(다) + 을 수 없다
참을 수 없어요 I can’t stand it.Without ending consonant 가(다) + ㄹ 수 있다
갈 수 없어요 I can’t go연습#1: Fill in the blanks using <-ㄹ/을 수 있다> or <-ㄹ/을 수 없다>.
(1) 애나: 학교에서 집이 가까워요?
셜리: 네, 가까워요.
애나: 얼마나 가까워요? 걸어 올 수 있어요?
셜리: 아니오, 걸어 올 수 없어요.
(2) 승혁: 지금 뭐 해요?
상목: 그냥 집에 있어요.
승혁: 그럼 영화 보러 __________________? (가다)
상목: 사실 오늘 감기(에) 걸려서 좀 아파요.
영화 보러 ________________. (가다)
(3) 새봄: 주말에 뭐해요?
원구: 아직 별 계획 없어요.
새봄: 그럼 차 좀 _______________________? (태워 주다) 차(를) 태워 주다 Give a ride
원구: 차가 고장났어요. 미안하지만 차 ______________________. (태워 주다)
(4) 레이먼드: 저어, 전화 좀 쓸 수 있을까요? (쓰다)
or 저어, 전화 좀 쓸 수 있어요? (쓰다)
Note: Both are good although 있을까요 sounds a bit more polite and more frequently used.
우영: 네. 여기 있어요.
(5) 우영: 저어, 길 좀 _______________ 있을까요? (물어보다) to ask
Note: When asking for directions, people usually use 있을까요?ending.
원구: 네, 어디로 가세요?
We learned <못 + Verb >, which also means <cannot V>.
With ending consonant 참(다) + 을 수 없다
못 참아요. I can’t stand it.Without ending consonant 가(다) + ㄹ 수 있다
못 가요 I can’t goCompared to <못 + Verb >, <Verb-ㄹ/을 수 없다> emphasizes more the fact that one is/was
not able to V. Probably for that reason, <못 + Verb > is more frequently used in casual
conversation than <Verb-ㄹ/을 수 없다>.
Let’s do a little more review of <못>. Remember that there was another way of using<못>. It is
<Verb-지 못하다>. The meaning is the same as <못 + Verb>, but Verb comes in front of <못>
as you can see in the following examples.
못 참아요. = 참(다)+ -지 못해요 = 참지 못해요 I can’t stand it.
못 가요. = 가(다)+ -지 못해요 = 가지 못해요 I can’t go.
Generally, people like to use a shorter expression as long as the meaning is the same (or very
similar). In that sense, 못 가요 is used more frequently used than 가지 못해요. Finally, we may
compare three different ways of saying “I cannot go”. Fill in “<”, “>”, or “=” in the parentheses:
Meaning (emphasis): 못 가요 ( ) 가지 못해요 ( ) 갈 수 없어요
Frequency: 못 가요 ( ) 가지 못해요 ( ) 갈 수 없어요
연습#2: Fill in the blanks using <못 + Verb> and <Verb-지 못해요>.
(1) 사실 오늘 감기(에) 걸려서 좀 아파요. 영화 보러 ____________________. (가다)
사실 오늘 감기(에) 걸려서 좀 아파요. 영화 보러 ____________________. (가다)
(2) 차가 고장났어요. 미안하지만 차 ______________________. (태워 주다)
차가 고장났어요. 미안하지만 차 ______________________. (태워 주다)

2. A 이/가 B 보다 (더) -다 / A 가 B 중에서 제일 -다
<A 이/가 B 보다 (더) Adj-다> can be translated as <A is more Adj than B>:
Breakfast Blend 가 French Roast 보다 (더) 맛있어요. Hint: 맛있다 to be delicious
Africa Kitamu 가 Breakfast Blend 보다 (더) 비싸요. Hint: 비싸다 to be expensive
< A 이/가 제일 Adj-다> can be translated as <A is the most Adj>. If you want to add <among
B> to the expression, you can say: < A 이/가 B 중에서 제일 Adj-다>, which can be translated as
<A is the most Adj among B>.
Africa Kitamu 가 제일 비싸요.
Note: 가장 and 제일 are interchangeably used.Africa Kitamu 가 커피 중에서 제일 비싸요.. Hint: 커피 coffee, 비싸요 to be expensive
French Roast, $25 Breakfast Blend, $30 Africa Kitamu, $70
너구리 $19 (pack of 20) 신라면 $18 (pack of 20) 짜파게티 $22 (pack of 20)
Using < A-이/가 B-보다 (더) -다>:
(1) 신라면이 짜파게티 보다 (더) 유명해요. 신라면 is more famous than 짜파게티.
(2) _____________________________________________________________________________
(3) _____________________________________________________________________________
(4) _____________________________________________________________________________
Using < A 이/가 제일 Adj-다>:
(1) 신라면이 한국 라면 중에서 제일 유명해요. 신라면 is the most famous among 한국 라면.
(2) _____________________________________________________________________________
(3) _____________________________________________________________________________
Sometimes, you may want to say <A and B are the same> or <A and B are similar>. <A 하고
B 하고 똑같이 Adj-다> and <A 하고 B 하고 비슷(비슷)하게 Adj-다> are the expressions for that.
<A 하고 B 하고> can be translated as <A and B are…>. <똑같이> is an adverb meaning
<identically>. <비슷(비슷)하게> is an adverb meaning <similarly>. Note that many Koreans like
to repeat 비슷 twice in the adverb although it does not change its meaning. To summarize,
<A 하고 B 하고 똑같이 Adj-다> can be translated as <A and B are identically Adj>; <A 하고
B 하고 비슷(비슷)하게 Adj-다> as <A and B are similarly Adj>.
연습#4: Fill in the blanks using <똑같이> or <비슷(비슷)하게>.
(1) French Roast 하고 Breakfast Blend 하고 __________________ 맛있어요.
(2) 너구리하고 신라면하고__________________ 비싸요.
(3) 한국어하고 일본어하고__________________ 어려워요.
