To the Ladies: How upset would you be?

When a friend told me what happened to her, I was quite upset for her. Are we overreacting? (I'm addressing this to the ladies out there but guys, feel free to leave your two cents. )

So this is the story:

My friend's husband likes taking photographs (just like MrAC does). One weekend, he tells her that he's going to some photography class. She thinks nothing of it... until she accidentally finds out that the photography class basically consisted of a bunch of guys (her husband one of them) "practicing" their photography skills on scantily clad models. These guys basically pay a fee "for the lesson" to take countless photos of these models who pose scandalously for them.

My friend was upset. I guess because her husband hadn't been completely honest with her, not to mention the fact that he was probably ogling as much as (or even more than) he was "practicing" his photography skills. I mean, I can imagine immature (or more likely insecure) high school boys doing that kinda thing, trying to get a kick out of snapping away at hot chicks, which they wouldn't dare to or have the chance to on any other occasion.

Imagine. A room full of sweaty guys with their cameras, all having paid a fee to snap away at some stranger. Or perhaps just trying to feed their visual appetite behind the camera. Ogling from a distance. OMG, how pathetic.

I feel bad for her. I mean, just weeks earlier, when a random tourist guy came up to her, commenting on her beauty and asking if he could take photos of her against the backdrop of the Hong Kong harbour, her husband had commented on what a loser that tourist was. And now, she finds him PAYING $$$ to take photos of a stranger. I wonder why he doesn't just "practice" his photography skills on his wife (a la Edison Chen? Who knows... It could be an effective aphrodisiac. ). Plus, it's free. Hmmm. I wonder why not. How odd.

I don't think there's a right or wrong about this issue. It all depends on the male, if he takes it as a form of art, then it's allright but if it's lust, then he's stepping over the line.

I agree with cheekyshooky... but then again, why does practicing photography skills have to be taking pictures of scandalous chicks (?) that is very weird... I wonder if that class was only open to guys? if so, then it definitely seems like something "fishy" is going on... o.O

Sneaky guy. There are hundreds, thousands more ways to practice or learn about photography than shooting at a model in a room. Whomever is running that class is brilliant and making $$.

Hmmm...uh I agree with chooky heh. Although I'd rather find friends or girls I know to practice on rather than pay for a lesson to shoot some models. But never know maybe they taught a lot about apperature, depth of field, exposure, lighting etc in the class. Lighting especially is pretty tough to learn on your own. Or maybe he didn't know the girls would be scandalous and just thought they'd be models, like fashion type rather than adult entertainment type heh. Or maybe he's just sleezy and wanted to look at other girls with an excuse, hard to tell. But I feel sorry for your friend either way, cuz no matter what his intentions were she still ended up upset. And most guys are hypocritical when it comes to their women hehe.

ha ha, i think i heard about this group from another HK friend who is into photography, if it is the same group as he told me, the organizers are also nudists who like to strip down naked themselves too... but seriously, what makes you assume its sweaty guys in some room drooling over a half-naked woman? what if it was a drawing class? would it still be wrong?

My first thought was my boyfriend would never do that, he'd like taking pictures of me outside in nice weather, he would never do that. Which makes me feel bad for her too, and really shows what a jerk her husband is. I guess I am pretty lucky now.

My friend is one of those models. According to her, it's not really photography class!

He sounds quite the hypocrite, I mean at first I thought as I read your blog that the class was nothing more than an alternative to life-drawing classes in art, but the more I read, and why he felt the need to cover it up seems a bit more seedy. Shameful.

well there certainly are worse things one can do behind their wife's back... not the end of the world.

"not exactly a "photography" class" Hm. So is your friend's husband continuing with the class? Paying to see some skin.... I think your friend should go to some AnD parties. haha

I think the word "photography" can only be used very loosely in this case. Taking photos of a scantily clad chick is not actually a really great way to train your photo eye.

Is it just one session with the scantily dressed model? Or is all the sessions? Does he take photos of anything else aside from models? I would just pissed at the fact that he didn't mention the model. Men check out hot women. Women check out hot men. That part she should not be upset about.

Not being honest and upfront about what was really happening during the photography classes creates distrust to some extent...
