  • Being Able To Feel Sad

    Friday, Nov 4, 2011 7:12PM / Members only

    Being able to feel sad

Is it a gift of God

    Or is it a punishment

    Snakes, butterflies and fish

    They do not cry

    Nor that they laugh

    They just eat and sleep

    Swim and fly

Isn't a creature supposed to live like this?

    The animals

    They still feel pain

How about the tree, the grass, the bacteria, the virus

    They do not feel pain

    Nor that they feel joy

Isn't a life supposed to live like this?

  • A Comment on the Comment On the Event of Poor Xiaoyueyue

    Friday, Oct 21, 2011 5:12PM / Members only

I came across this comment somewhere on the internet, after the unfortunate event of poor Xiaoyueyue happened:

People living in Hong Kong might not see it or realize it but China and most chinese people don’t care about much beyond themselves. It makes sense comming from a place that people litterally starved to death a few decades ago but sadly it shows it ugly head here again. You see it in this video and you also see it in the horrible way in which Chinese people see and treat animals. From markets to the zoo’s millions of Chinese people walk past there horrible conditions and say nothing about it. Lack of emotion or affinity towards animals has been clinically proven as a sign of personality disorders and a overall lack of compassion. Also Chinese society desperately lacks the most basic in manners...

The way that this foreign friend view China, from a Chinese point of view, is both right and wrong. China, as all other human societies, has its good side and has its evil side. The only problem of China is that evil is more common here than in other countries. But still, there are people who are against those evils, who are protesting and tring hard to change the bad and evil things.

Indeed, the Chinese people are cruel to animals, http://bbs.chinanews.com/web/tp/hd/2011/09-23/18470.shtml (残忍的中国“狗肉经济” 为了金钱肆意屠狗 ), but there are also people who are protecting animals. (http://club.china.com/data/thread/1011/2732/68/12/6_1.html志愿者拦截运狗车 僵持26小时 掏8万元买下所有狗) And in China, when you are doing all these things which you think right, you face more pressure and more difficulties than you do it in America, in Germany, in Japan, in Australia. And those people are great. And i feel China is hopeful.

I guess the question I have about how similar Cantonese and Mandarin are, then why can't I understand Mandarin, but I am beginning to understand Cantonese? There are some things that aren't the same at all, like how you ask questions and express the negative in Cantonese. There have even been special characters created for words and suffixes that exist in Cantonese and not Mandarin. Actually, I think Cantonese is closer, in terms of both tones and grammar, to "classical Chinese" than is Mandarin. I am sure there are many books about the history of the various Chinese languages that talk about how the regional variants developed. I suspect that Cantonese and Mandarin are about as similar as Spanish and Italian. I am very fluent in Spanish, so I can understand some spoken Italian, but some things are totally different. :)

I have read that 40% of Mandarin and Cantonese words are cognates, which means that they are recognizable, though perhaps not identical in pronunciation. But there are more tones in Cantonese and different sounds that you don't have in Mandarin. Also, at least in Hong Kong, most people don't speak good Mandarin, and a lot of people don't speak it or understand very much of it. Mandarin is not part of mandatory school instruction the way it is on the Mainland, so people have to take special classes in school (or as adults) to learn it. Yes, you do hear Mandarin spoken on the streets of HK, but locals tell me 98% of that is Mainland tourists.

that story, of the little girl, has been on television news
here and in the newspaper, it is heart chilling. nobody here mentioned, that your law is, driver must pay for injured. that is not the case here. in australia when we have a car we by law, must pay registration every year which includes automatic insurance, called third party insurance, to protect against this situation.
